Based on a review of current medical treatments used for symptomatic endometriosis, a team of French researchers recently found that medical treatment of endometriosis is effective in treating pain and preventing recurrence of disease after surgery. Surprisingly enough, they discovered that taking an oral contraceptive pill continuously is as effective as taking GnRH-a—and oral contraceptives have fewer side-effects.
The study, "An update on the pharmacological management of endometriosis," was published in the February 2013 issue of Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy.
The authors also argue that research should be done on novel products that can reduce expression of the disease without stopping ovulation.
